The USS Arkansas (BB 33) was a Wyoming class battleship that served with the British Grand Fleet in the last few months of the First World War, and saw active service in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific during the Second World War. USS ARKANSAS was the fourth and last ship in the VIRGINIA - class. The cruiser was the fourth ship in the Navy named after the state of Arkansas. After decommissioning, the ARKANSAS was laid up at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA, until she was disposed of by recycling.

The 311-foot submarine was present in Tokyo Bay at the signing of the Peace Treaty ending WW II. Named after the whale, not the U of A sports mascot, it is the only vessel to have earned battle ribbons in WW II and Vietnam.
